The Curonian Spit is a unique and distinctive little patch of land situated in the very center of Europe that has been carefully protected and maintained by destiny and people. In 1961, when the town was founded in the Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit, a new name of the place appeared on the map – Neringa. According to its size Panevezys is the fifth town of Lithuania. It is located on the "Via Baltica" international highway. For the first time Panevezys is mentioned in historical sources in 1503. The town is situated on a plain in the upper reaches of the river Nevezis. |

The city became famous for the Battle of Saule, which took place in 1236 near Siauliai. It was in historical chronicles detailing the battle between the armies of Lithuania and the Order of the Crusaders that Siauliai was mentioned for the first time. Near the town, on the left bank of the Kulpe River sits the famous Hill of Crosses. After the rebellions during the 1800s, people from near and far began to put crosses on the hill till our days. |

Trakai is a symbol of Lithuanian tourism like Venice in Italy, or St. Petersburg in Russia. Marijampolė, is an industrial city and the capital of the Marijampolė County in the south of Lithuania, bordering Poland and Russian Kaliningrad Oblast, and Lake Vištytis. The population of Marijampolė is 48,700 (2003). It is the Lithuanian center of the Suvalkija region. Under Soviet occupation from 1956 to 1989, the town was officially named Kapsukas, after Vincas Kapsukas, founder of the Lithuanian Communist Party. The historical name was restored just before Lithuania regained its independence. |

Birstonas is simply the most beautiful little town in all Lithuania. The small town of Birstonas, population 3800, has provided respite to travellers throughout its history. In its early years, Birstonas was a favoured hunting area of the Grand Duke Vytautas and his guests from around Europe during the 1400's. |
