Liepāja is third largest Latvia city, which for their home have chosen around 90 000 people. It is located on the southwest part of Latvia, on the shore of Baltic sea and takes up 1.5 - 6.5 km wide seaside dune rampart and lowland behind the dune. But from dry land side Liepāja is bordered by Liepāja and Tosmare lakes. Liepāja is “green city”, because 35% of total city size is taken up by green areas and nature territories, including parks and gardens, forests and waters, and other nature values.
Liepāja climate is average, with small yearly temperature changes, heightened air humidity and cloudiness. At winter period in Liepāja is warmer, but in summer periods a little cooler than in other places of Latvia. Also wind force, which most of the time blows from west is greater, than average in Latvia. Liepāja isn’t called the City of Winds for no reason.
Beginning of Liepāja can be found in small fisherman village — “Līvas village”, which in historical writings is mentioned already at year 1253. By surviving dark middle ages, this inhabited place at the time of Kurzeme dukedom gained city rights. Prosperity by city was experienced at the time of Russian empire. Successfully lived through World War I, in year 1919 for a short time Liepāja became a capital city of Latvia. At the time of Second World War Liepāja was heavily bombarded, but have preserved its spite, which was gained at the soviet time. Today city is located in new extraordinary search of development.
In Liepāja are proud of the oldest professional theatre in Latvia, opera art, symphonic orchestra, museums and galleries, as well as many other vulture and art valuables. World range is gained by Pianism star festival. International recognition are gained by such rock festivals as 'Liepajas Dzintars', 'Beach Party', 'Mēs Liepājai' and others. A tradition has become Kurzeme rally, Sea celebrations and International Flower Festival.
In Liepāja are also professional soccer, hockey, basketball and other sport teams. Respectable success not only in Latvian but also World level are gained by several individual sport representatives (track-and-field athletics, gymnasts, swimmers, wrestlers and others).
